BODC's Argo data in the ANDRO Atlas

The British Oceanographic Data Centre contribute more than 30,000 Argo data profiles to the ANDRO Atlas. Once complete, the ANDRO Atlas will be an unprecedented database of direct and absolute measurements of the ocean circulation down to a depth of 2000 metres.

The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) announces the launch of the VocabEditor Client (version 1.0) which allows external authorities 'editing access' to controlled vocabularies held within the NERC Vocabulary Server, which is hosted by BODC. Within the VocabEditor Client authorised editors may maintain terms - insert, modify or deprecate - within the lists under their governance without the need for manual interaction by BODC.

The British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC) has contributed to the Charting Progress 2 (CP2) report which was launched publicly on 21 July 2010 by the Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Natural Environment and Fisheries. This month marks BODC's 40th birthday. Our history began in April 1969 when the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) created the British Oceanographic Data Service (BODS), located at the National Institute of Oceanography, Wormley, Surrey. Over last the 40 years we have witnessed many changes; these include our name, location and organisational structure, the evolving nature of data collected by the science of oceanography and the technology we depend on. However, our fundamental role as a national facility for preserving and distributing marine data has remained constant.

The GEBCO One Minute Grid provides global bathymetry data on a one-arc minute grid. Version 2.0 is now available for download which includes the Arctic Ocean from version 2.23 of the International Bathymetric Chart of the Arctic Ocean (IBCAO) and updates to shallow water areas around India, the Korean Peninsula and South Africa.

NERC is to provide continued support for the research programme that provides a detection system for climate changes in the Atlantic Ocean. A new programme, RAPID-WATCH, will build on the work of the Rapid Climate Change (RAPID) project, so that observations in the Atlantic will continue until 2014. This will result in a valuable ten year data set of direct measurements.
