BODC Cruise Metadata Report for RRS James Cook (740H) cruise JC102

Introduction

This report collates information from the BODC cruise inventory and oceanographic databases. It presents

Cruise Inventory Information

Long name RRS James Cook (740H) cruise JC102
Short name JC102
Objectives and Narrative The primary purpose of this cruise was to install an array of 25 ocean-bottom seismographs to record passive micro-seismicity data at the 13º 20'N oceanic core complex on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This array of seismographs will be left in place for approximately 6 months to record local seismic events associated with extension-related slippage on the fault planes that accommodate spreading at this plate boundary. The data will be used to test models of plate accretion at slower spreading rates. This cruise is the first of three: i) passive array deployment; ii) passive array recovery; and iii) active source seismic imaging, coupled with Autosub near-seabed geophysical and oceanographic surveying. This cruise comprised a transit to/from the work area of ~9 days in total, 0.5 days of OBS deployment and 2.5 days of swath bathymetry data in-fill in the work area. Swath bathymetry and gravity data were acquired throughout the transits to/from ports.
