Objectives and Narrative |
The cruise JC112 is the first leg of the fieldwork to be completed for the OSCAR project. The aim of OSCAR is to
1. characterise how heat from the interior of the Earth is transported across the crust into the ocean by hydrothermal flows 2. determine the impact the hydrothermal and geothermal fluxes have on the circulation of the abyssal ocean. OSCAR has a geology component, led by Durham University and mainly dealing with item 1 above, and an oceanography one, focusing on item 2 and led by NOC. JC112 was prominently designed to serve the oceanographic component of the OSCAR programme, although it also included the deployment of magnetotelluric (MT) landers (GEOMAR, Kiel) and was carried out concurrently with cruise JC113, led by the University of Oregon, and focusing on measuring heat flow through sediment ponds on the ocean floor. The activities specifically related to JC112 were: 1. Deployment of 3 long hydrographic moorings, two of them with a bottom pressure recorder (BPR) at the base. 2. Deployment of 1 BPR lander 3. Deployment of 2 short ADCP moorings. 4. Deployment of 12 MT landers. 5. Completion of 66 CTD/VMP (Conductivity, Temperature, Depth/Vertical Microstructure Profiling) stations with salinity, Oxygen and Helium sampling. 6. Completion of 2 24-hour deep CTD surveys of an area over the Costa Rica Rift without sampling or VMP casting. 7. Completion of 48 zooplankton sampling stations (typically immediately before or after a CTD cast). 8. Underway measurement of surface T & S, vertical current profiles (with hull-mounted ADCPs) and marine meteorology) In addition to NOC, Durham and University of Oregon scientists and technicians, the cruise benefitted from the participation of scientists from the Universidad de Costa Rica, and Instituto Oceanografico de la Armada de Ecuador. |
