Objectives and Narrative JC019 was part of the SEA-CALIPSO project, devised to image the lithosphere and the magma system at Soufriére Hills Volcano (SHV), Montserrat, using tomography and reflection seismology. The experiment was carried out in December 2008, with primary support from NSF (Geophysics, Continental Dynamics, I&F, P&G), NERC, BGS, IRIS, Discovery TV, FCO). Before the cruise 28 3-component Refteks and 209 1-component Texans from PASSCAL were deployed on the island and 10 OBS from OBIC were deployed in the waters around it. The NERC ship RRS James Cook towed an airgun array and a streamer on encircling and radial tracks for 77 hours about Montserrat on the days 16-21 December, providing 4414 shots sampled by receiving sites and yielding a great amount of data requiring processing. The streamer deployment allowed new seismic sections of the upper 1 to 2 km of the crust around Montserrat to be imaged. The goals of the project are to constrain the physical structure of crust and upper mantle beneath SHV and around the island and to use these data to model volcanic processes, island arc volcanism, arc crust evolution and magma genesis.
