Quality assessment
With the first gauge, there were problems of overlap of the chart around the gauge drum, revealed by the residuals. Several periods of data are suggestive of siltation effects after storms and/or problems with the float.
During the stormy conditions in December 1991, the 'bubble-pot' became unattached which resulted in inaccurate pen recordings on the marigrams. At the beginning of 1992 the tide-gauge had completely broken down and following maintenance, a calibration check during 1993 revealed a 6cm shortfall, which was corrected.
