PurposeResearch
ObjectivesOne mooring was recovered and two were deployed in the northern Weddell Sea, to extend long-term measurements of the export of Weddell Sea Deep and Bottom Water in the Weddell Gyre by Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (LDEO), Columbia University. Two moorings were recovered and five were deployed in Orkney Passage, to extend long-term time series measuring the export of Weddell Sea Deep Water through Orkney Passage; these moorings are maintained in collaboration between BAS and LDEO, and form part of BAS Long-term Monitoring and Survey project. In addition, CTD profiles were obtained at the locations of deployed and recovered moorings.

During the cruise a tethered and a free-floating spar buoy, as well as a tethered balloon were deployed to measure the effect of breaking waves on air/sea interaction and gas exchange. This was part of the WAGES project, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton and University of Leeds.
