PurposeResearch
ObjectivesThe Atlantic Meridional Transect programme (AMT; www.amt-uk.org) provides a sustained open ocean in situ observing system to enable early warning of any fundamental change in Atlantic Ocean ecosystem functioning and to better forecast the marine environment for society's needs. AMT also provides a contextual logistical and scientific infrastructure for independently-funded national and international open-ocean biogeochemical and ecological research.
Specifically, the AMT programme conducts fundamental oceanographic research of the upper 300-500 metres of the water column, studying the biology, chemistry and physics along a transect through the Atlantic Ocean. These studies involve daily and underway measurements of biological species (plankton) distributions, their abundance, and production, and also research into the physical, chemical and optical properties of the Atlantic Ocean. The work is being carried out to help to understand oceanic carbon cycles and to calibrate and validate satellite-observed information for the remote sensing of ocean colour and sea surface temperature.
