PurposeResearch
ObjectivesTo complete the Antarctic component of USIPS (Under Sea-Ice and Pelagic Surveys - A collaborative project funded by NERC, Marine Laboratory Aberdeen, and BAS). The project involves the deployment of Autosub A.U.V., equipped with an EK500 echo-sounder. Main objectives are:
1) Under sea ice measurements of ice thickness, light characteristics under ice (P.A.R.), hydrographic parameters and assess the use of ADCP for 'ice tracking'.
2) Comparison of krill abundance under ice and in open water.
3) Assess avoidance characteristics of krill to ship surveys.
4) Investigation of iceberg sub-surface topography and biological activity.
Data collected by Autosub can be compared with similar shop-borne instrumentation.
The cruise also includes TUBA, a multi-frequency sonar, attached to MULTI-NET, for target fishing. This combination will assess the acoustic response of specific species.
