PurposeResearch
ObjectivesAMT14 tracked across the southern subtropical gyre and equator, and an additional two days of ship-time made it possible to run a line of hydrographic stations on a more westerly route towards the centre of the northern subtropical gyre. The main purpose of work in this region was to determine the trophic state of the plankton ecosystem with respect to large scale patterns in the ambient concentrations and supply to the surface waters of inorganic nutrients and of dissolved organic matter.
1) To determine how the structure, functional properties and trophic status of the major planktonic ecosystems vary in space and time.
2) To determine the role of physical processes in controlling the rates of nutrient supply, including dissolved organic matter, to the planktonic ecosystem.
3) To determine the role of the atmosphere-ocean exchange and photo-degradation in the formation and fate of organic matter.
