  • Flanders Marine Institute (VLIZ) - VLIZ is the coordination and information platform for marine scientific research in Flanders - a focal point for marine and coastal-related research that serves as an international contact point.
  • Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute - A part of Florida state's Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). FWRI conducts applied marine research in collaboration with other academic, non-profit and private marine research institutions.
  • Florida Institute of Oceanography - FIO is a State University System of Florida Academic Infrastructure Support Organization, hosted by the University of South Florida.   • Johns Hopkins University Ocean Remote Sensing Group - The Ocean Remote Sensing Group, part of the Applied Physics Laboratory (APL), conducts research associated with civilian and military applications of remote sensing technology in the marine environment.
  • Key West Institute - Aims to provide a forum for influence and education in environmental science and help sustain world species diversity.
  • Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST) - Marine science and technology institute based in Ansan. Aims to study the seas around Korea as well as further afield, promote efficient use of marine resources, develop technologies and cooperate with government agencies, universities, private industry and international partners.
  • Laboratory of Ocean Physics (LPO) - IFREMER laboratory dedicated to understanding ocean dynamics, the role of the ocean and impact of the thermohaline circulation and understanding of ocean-coastal exchange.
  • Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory - LDEO is a component of the Earth Institute at Columbia University. A leader in earth sciences, its scientists were the first to map the seafloor, develop a computer model that could predict El Nino, provide concrete proof of plate tectonics and reveal the oceans’ role in climate change.

  • Management Unit of the North Sea Mathematical Models (MUMM) - MUMM is a Belgian government institute that: studies the ecosystems of the North Sea using mathematical modelling, collects information to assess the condition of the marine environment and represents Belgium in a number of inter-governmental conventions dealing with the protection of the marine environment.
  • Marine Conservation Institute - A non-profit scientific and conservation advocacy organisation working to protect and restore marine life on the West Coast of the United States and beyond.
  • Marine Institute for Oceanography - The Mutsu Institute for Oceanography and its oceanographic research vessel "Mirai" carry out marine data collection and analysis, mostly for climate change research.
  • Marine Resources Development Foundation - Based in Florida, MRDF was created in 1970 with the goal of developing a better understanding of earth's marine resources and has evolved into an organisation with both an educational and scientific focus.
  • Marine Scotland - Directorate of Scottish Government responsible for marine and fisheries issues in Scotland.
  • Matis - Icelandic Food and Biotech R&D institute founded in 2007 from the merger of three former public food research institutes: The Icelandic Fisheries Laboratory, MATRA (a joint venture of IceTec and the Agricultural Research Institute) and the research division of the Environment and Food Agency.
  • McGill University Department of Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences - Based in Montreal. Research covers a wide spectrum of domains such as physical meteorology, dynamics, radar and satellite remote sensing, physical oceanography, air-sea ice/snow-ocean interactions, atmospheric chemistry and physics as well as air pollution and climate.
  • Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) - A unique oceanographic research centre that uses state-of-the-art equipment and methods to study the ocean and its environment and promotes a peer relationship between engineers and scientists.
  • Mote Marine Laboratory - A non-profit organisation set up in 1955, dedicated to excellence in marine sciences.
  • NAFC Marine Centre - An industry-managed institute dedicated to supporting Shetland's maritime industries.
  • NOAA - The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
  • NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory - Carries out interdisciplinary scientific investigations in oceanography and atmospheric science. Current programmes focus on open ocean observations in support of long-term monitoring and prediction of the ocean environment on time scales from hours to decades.
  • National Center for Atmospheric Research. Oceanography Section - Part of the Climate and Global Dynamics Division at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. Aims to understand the large-scale ocean circulation and the dynamics of climate through studies of the important processes in the ocean and sea-ice, in air-sea-ice interactions and in coupled systems.
  • National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) - Established November 1993 with the aim of developing technology to solve the engineering problems associated with harvesting of resources in the Indian Exclusive Economic Zone. NIOT is involved in deep sea technology, deep sea mining, coastal zone management, marine instrumentation, wave energy and numerical modelling.
  • National Institute of Oceanography - NIO, a large oceanographic laboratory, was established in 1966. The focus of research has been on observing and understanding the special oceanographic features of the North Indian basin.
  • National Oceanographic Research Institute - NORI has carried out observations of ocean currents and water temperature, salinity, etc, at about 4200 stations since 1982. Results have been used for the issue of ocean current chart and marine development.
  • National Oceanography Centre - Part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), NOC is a national research organisation, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean, working in partnership with the UK marine research community.
  • Naval Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction (NOAP) Laboratory - Dedicated to naval ocean analysis and prediction with a broad spectrum from basic research to operational application toward objective analysis on observational data and environmental prediction such as circulation, waves and thermohaline structure on local, regional and global scales.
  • Naval Oceanographic Office - Located at Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. Provides oceanographic information including databases, near real-time modelling and oceanographic analysis.
  • Naval Oceanography Portal - The US Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command (NMOC) provides critical information from the ocean depths to the most distant reaches of space, meeting needs in the military, scientific, and civilian communities.
  • Netherlands Centre for Coastal Research (NCK) - A platform for coastal research co-operation between Dutch institutes focusing on research into the physical processes in the coastal zone, including waves, currents, transport processes and the influence of biota on morphological processes.
  • Nofima - Norwegian Institute of Food, Fisheries and Aquaculture Research.
  • Nova Southeastern University Oceanographic Center - Located near Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the Center serves as a national, regional and community resource and is comprised of several institutes, including the National Coral Reef Institute, the Guy Harvey Research Institute and the Save Our Seas Shark Center.

  • Oregon State University Hatfield Marine Science Center - HMSC, located in Newport, Oregon, is a marine laboratory distinguished by its collaborative research partnerships. Originally established as a marine laboratory for Oregon State University, HMSC currently hosts collaborative research and education programs from seven OSU colleges and six state and federal agencies.
  • Pennsylvania State University Applied Research Laboratory - ARL champions the transfer of advanced technologies and manufacturing processes, in partnership with industry and Navy research development centres, to acquisition programs and fleet operations, as well as to other government agencies and the private sector.
  • Plymouth Marine Laboratory - Independent, impartial provider of scientific research and contract services relating to the marine environment. Undertakes fundamental and strategic research to underpin the marine requirements of the United Kingdom.
  • Ruder Boskovic Institute - Croatia's leading scientific institute in marine and environmental research, as well as natural and biomedical sciences.
  • Rutgers University Institute of Marine and Coastal Science - Located in New Brunswick, New Jersey, IMCS is dedicated to discovering and communicating earth science for the benefit of society, particularly understanding the processes that govern change and sustainability in the oceans to best use and protect marine and coastal resources.
  • Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS) - Among the oldest oceanographic organisations in the world, SAMS delivers research and education that aim to improve understanding and sustainable use of the marine environment. It employs around 150 staff at its Scottish Marine Institute near Oban.
  • Scottish Oceans Institute - Interdisciplinary research institute, based at the University of St Andrews, studying the marine environment.
  • Scripps Institution of Oceanography - Founded in 1903, Scripps is one of the world's oldest and largest centres for ocean, earth and atmospheric science research, education, and public service. A department of UC San Diego, research at Scripps encompasses physical, chemical, biological, geological and geophysical studies.
  • Sea Fisheries Institute in Gdynia - Poland's oldest marine science centre. Areas of research at the SFI include fisheries biology, fisheries oceanography and marine ecology, fish processing technology and fisheries economics.
  • Sea Mammal Research Unit (SMRU) - Based at the University of St Andrews. Carries out interdisciplinary research into the biology of marine mammals, trains marine mammal scientists and advises governments, NGOs and industry on conservation issues.
  • Shannon Point Marine Center - Supports and promotes Western Washington University's teaching and research in the marine sciences, provides access to facilities for visiting scientists, supports supervised, independent research via federally-funded programs and promotes ocean literacy among the general public.
  • Sherkin Island Marine Station - Sherkin Island is situated one-and-a-quarter miles off the south-west coast of Ireland. The Marine Station carries out long-term monitoring programmes on the flora and fauna of Roaringwater Bay and the surrounding area. It also aims to raise awareness of the marine environment in Ireland.
  • Shirshov Institute of Oceanology - Oldest and the largest Russian ocean research centre, part of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Studies physical, chemical, biological and geological processes in the oceans, especially those around Russia.
  • Shoals Marine Laboratory - Founded 1966, SML, based on Appledore Island in Maine and part of Cornell University, is dedicated to undergraduate education and research in marine science.
  • Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science - Based in Plymouth, UK, SAHFOS' Continuous Plankton Recorder marine monitoring programme has been collecting data from the North Atlantic and the North Sea on the ecology and biogeography of plankton since 1931.
  • Spanish Institute of Oceanography (IEO) - IEO is a public research organisation dedicated to marine science research, especially in relation to scientific knowledge of the oceans, the sustainability of fishery resources and the marine environment.
  • Sven Loven Centre for Marine Sciences - The marine infrastructure organisation of the University of Gothenburg. The centre comprises several research vessels and other smaller boats as well as two stations for research and education.
  • Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute - SMHI's mission is to manage and develop information on weather, water and climate that provides knowledge and advanced decision-making data for public services, the private sector and the public. SMHI aims to contribute to increased social benefit, safety and a sustainable society.
  • Tethys Research Institute - A non-profit NGO dedicated to the preservation of the marine environment that has been conducting internationally qualified scientific research aimed at the conservation of whales and dolphins since 1986.
  • Tohoku National Fisheries Research Institute - Conducts research on fisheries in the northern Pacific Ocean off the coast of Tohoku district to provide information about fishery resource management and promote fishery and aquaculture production.
  • UK Hydrographic Office - The Physical Oceanography Department provides a range of oceanographic products and services in support of the Royal Navy's environmental forecasting and operations.
  • University of Bremen - Center for Tropical Marine Ecology, ZMT is a research and training institution.
  • University of Charleston - The Grice Marine Laboratory supports teaching and research in evolutionary biology, marine biogeography, developmental and molecular biology, benthic ecology, microbial ecology, phytoplankton ecology, environmental physiology, fish systematics, and invertebrate zoology.
