World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE)
WOCE sea level Data Assembly Centre (DAC)
The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) was a major international project concerned with global scale deep ocean measurements and modelling. The aim was to improve our understanding of how ocean circulation affects the Earth's climate. The project was part of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP).
The field phase of the project lasted from 1990-1998 and was followed by analysis, interpretation, modelling and synthesis activities (AIMS). The AIMS phase of WOCE, officially continued to the end of 2002.
Under the WOCE data management system data flowed from the data collectors to Data Assembly Centres (DAC) and Special Analysis Centres (SAC). The DACs were responsible for the quality assurance, distribution and archival of the data.
WOCE sea level data management
Responsibility for the data management of the in-situ sea level data set for WOCE was held jointly by the University of Hawai`i Sea Level Center (UHSLC) and BODC. The two centres performed complementary activities. UHSLC acted as the 'fast-delivery' centre, providing rapid access to data for those involved in satellite altimetry. BODC operated as the 'delayed-mode' centre, providing the definitive quality controlled data set at the end of the project.

BODC's role in the Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) project
At the end of 2002 the Climate Variability and Predictability (CLIVAR) project took over from WOCE as the WCRP global study of the oceans' role in climate system. BODC will continue to operate the sea level DAC for CLIVAR and take on the additional responsibility for the CLIVAR current meter DAC.
