UK Surface Ocean - Lower Atmosphere Study (UK SOLAS)
Project 14
High wind air-sea exchanges (HiWASE)
Principal Investigator — Margaret Yelland, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (NOCS).
Objectives
- To make direct measurement of the turbulent air-sea fluxes of sensible and latent heat, momentum and carbon dioxide
- To improve parameterisation of these fluxes in terms of mean meteorological and sea state variables
Activities
Fieldwork has been taking place on the Norwegian weather ship Polarfront between since 2006. Air-sea fluxes of sensible and latent heat, momentum and carbon dioxide will be inferred from measurements of
- Air temperature and 3D winds
- Atmospheric humidity and carbon dioxide concentration
