UK Surface Ocean - Lower Atmosphere Study (UK SOLAS)
Project 3
Field observations of sea spray, gas fluxes and whitecaps (SEASAW)
Principal Investigator — Ian Brooks, Institute for Atmospheric Science, University of Leeds.
Objectives
- To study the fundamental controls of air-sea gas exchange, with emphasis on wind-driven effects
Activities
Fieldwork included one dedicated research cruise (D317), and participation another UK SOLAS research cruise (D313), both in the Northeast Atlantic (D313 and D317). The main measurements have been
- Whitecap coverage and wave breaking
- Bubble production by breaking waves
- Meteorological parameters including high resolution wind data
- Aerosol characterisation
