D321B Discrete Salinity Sampling Document
Originator's Protocol for Data Acquisition and Analysis
Water samples for the analysis of salinity were obtained from a large number of CTD casts performed during the cruise. Samples were drawn from multiple Niskin bottles on these casts and stored onboard, prior to analysis. In addition, discrete salinity samples were regularly drawn from the ship's non toxic underway water supply throughout the cruise.
The salinity samples were analysed on board using a Guildline Autosal 8400B salinometer in a constant temperature laboratory.
CTD bottle salinities were ultimately used by the data originator to calibrate both CTD conductivity sensors

BODC Data Processing Procedures
The salinity data were supplied to BODC in Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Salinity values were extracted from these and loaded into BODC's ORACLE database. Data that were considered unrealistic were flagged suspect.
It should be noted that there were a few metadata quality issues associated with this cruise. BODC have compiled the best data set available given these circumstances, using supporting metadata from other sources (where possible).
