PurposeResearch
ObjectivesGerman Small-scale Bottom Trawl Survey (GSBTS) and International Herring Larval Survey (IHLS) in the North Sea
In the framework of the GSBTS, the ground fish within the standard study area "Box A" in the German Bight shall be documented with intensive fishing over three days in a small area. Parallel to this the research, the Senckenberg Institute will document the invertebrate ground fauna. In addition environmental parameters such as salt content, temperature and nutrients will be documented. The trip is in the context of the summer GSBTS. In the summer survey, Box A has been tested for more than 20 years as one of 12 areas in the North Sea.
The second part of the trip is part of the International Herring Larval Survey. The studies serve to regularly document the frequency and distribution of herring larvae in the spawning areas of North Sea Herring populations. They are coordinated by the International Council of the Exploration of the Seas (ICES) and have been carried out in this form since 1972. Germany and the Netherlands participate in the International Herring Larval Survey.
