ObjectivesDY029 was funded as part of NERCs Shelf Sea Biogeochemistry (SSB) programme, as the second of the pelagic set of cruises and the second cruise in 2015. The SSB programme aims to reduce uncertainty in our process understanding of the cycling of nutrients and carbon, and the controls on primary and secondary production in both the UK and NW European shelf seas, and in wider global biogeochemical cycles. The focus of DY029 was to examine biogeochemical and ecological changes during the spring bloom in the Celtic Sea.
The specific objectives of DY029 were:
(a) A time-series of measurements at the Central Celtic Sea (CCS) to observe temporal changes;
(b) To put these measurements into a wider context of process measurements across the Celtic Sea by sampling other process sites (including CS2 at the shelf edge, site A near the Celtic Deep, and CTD stations along transect O between CS2 and CCS, and transect J between between site A and CCS);
(c) To maintain a series of long-term moorings at CCS through recovery and redeployment;
(d) To make iron measurements along three shelf to open ocean transects (as part of the iron work package part of the SSB programme);
(e) To deploy and recover a number of gliders, both on the short term (month long) and long term (three to six months);
(f) To deploy and recover a Wirewalker mooring making high-resolution temporal observations of water column structure and biogeochemistry.
Biogeochemical and ecological process measurements were collected six times at CCS, twice at CS2 and along the O transect once and along the J transect twice. These included state measurements through the water column, as well as rate measurements and incubations and experiments. Two moorings (ADCP string, temperature chain) were successfully recovered and three moorings (ADCP string, temperature chain, ADCP bedframe) were deployed. Four gliders were deployed and recovered during the cruise, while three gliders were deployed for two months and one glider was recovered.
