Objectives | The PHANTASTIC program comprised two cruises in 2013-14 aiming to unravelling Phaeocystis antarctica adaptive responses in the Antarctic ecosystem. Both cruises were aboard the Research Vessel Nathaniel B.Palmer and complementary research projects focused on:
Bio-assay experiments of iron and light availability to phytoplankton
Phytoplankton pigments and elemental composition
Phytoplankton physiology
Phytoplankton taxonomy by FlowCAM
Trace Metals sampling and measurements in context of GEOTRACES
Genetics of Phaeocystis Antarctica
Small scale physical oceanography
Dimethylsulfide dynamics
Phytoplankton photoinhibition
The second leg of NBP-13-10 aboard RV Nathaniel B. Palmer was a transect towards the Ross Sea, stations in plankton bloom regions of the Ross Sea and some final stations in the open Antarctic Circumpolar Current. Loes Gerringa and Patrick Laan were onboard focusing on the trace metals research adhering strictly to GEOTRACES guidelines and protocols. |
