ObjectivesThe NARVAL 2016 campaign is a multi-disciplinary sea-trial that will take place in an area of the North Atlantic Ocean where the knowledge of the marine environment is weak. One of its objectives is to complete the knowledge in the field of acoustical oceanography. The water column will thus be studied by measuring at one point of interest the underwater ambient noise in the UK waters. This point is included in a larger network of measurement observatories within the waters of neighbour countries. That data, in relation with the study of the propagation of the sound in the water in the area and with the bathymetric features around the points of measurements will be confronted with the maritime traffic in the area and will allow a study of the presence and the nature of the marine mammals in this region. Moreover, during these measurements, and along the transects toward the point of observat10n, Beautemps-Beaupre will conduct opportunity measurements that will allow to complete the knowledge of the maritime physical environment in oceanography, geophysics and sedimentology.
