| Objectives | This British Geological Survey project was entitled ' Atlantic Margin Project: Rockdrilling, Vibrocoring and Gravity coring' and the work carried out in the Eastern Atlantic along the Hebrides Terrace and out towards Rockall.
A BGS 5m rockdrill was the main sampling tool used for the programme. The drill was deployed over the stern of the vessel using the ships 'A' frame and the BGS combined power hoist umbilical winch system. In rockdrilling mode the tool collects a core of 49mm diameter inside a steel liner from which it is then extracted upon recovery. A seabed-looking camera was fitted to the rig to photograph and help to identify the nature of the seabed and to establish the likelihood of success or failure of the drilling attempt. In vibrocoring mode the tool can collect up to 5m of soft sediment core of variable lithology in a steel core barrel. The gravity corer obtained samples by gravity impact and collected in a steel core barrel. Despite the vessel delays it was a productive cruise and new data was obtained. Many of the planned sites were successfully occupied. Downtime was minimal and the new rockdrill efficiency was higher than in previous cruises. Deck handling and deployment was straightforward. A downward-looking echo-sounder allowed a softer landing for the drill. The rockdrill upgrades performed to full specification and have proved robust and reliable improving the drill capability. |
