ObjectivesBetween the 9th and the 18th of May 2005, fifteen scientists from various international research institutes and six technical crew from the British Geological Survey joined the RRS James Clark Ross and her crew for a scientific research cruise to discover what lies on the ocean floor around the volcanic island of Montserrat.
The Soufriere Hills Volcano, Montserrat, has been in a major eruptive period from 1995 to 2003. During this time more than half a cubic kilometre of magma has been erupted, making this one of the most significant volcanic eruptions of the last few decades. The 2003 Montserrat lava dome collapse event (12-13 July) is the largest documented dome collapse for any volcano in recent history. The dome collapse was the result of two years of continual lava extrusion. Collapse occurred over an 18-hour period wherein 210 million cubic metres of pyroclastic material avalanched into the ocean. Approximately 90% of the erupted material from the Soufriere Hills Volcano was deposited into ocean.
Cruise JR123 of the RRS James Clark Ross aimed to find out how this material was deposited and distributed in the ocean. This was done by imaging and selectively sampling the ocean floor around Montserrat. The data acquired provides new information about the volcanic history of Montserrat and understanding the major geological processes that build volcanic islands.
