ObjectivesAlgorithms for interpreting satellite ocean colour imagery are known to perform poorly in turbid coastal waters. This cruise enabled investigation into optical and biogeochemical properties of a range of coastal waters, from relatively clear water at the mouth of the Bristol Channel to extremely turbid waters off Cardiff. Measurements included an extensive range of in situ inherent optical properties, multi- and hyper-spectral radiometry as well as water sample analyses such as Total Suspended Material, Chlorophyll and Coloured Dissolved Organic Materials. This data will be used to develop improved satellite interpretation algorithms based upon radiative transfer theory as part of a NERC Fellowship held by the Principal Investigator, D. McKee.
