Status | Completed |
Port of departure | Menai Bridge, United Kingdom |
Port of return | Birkenhead, United Kingdom |
Purpose | Research |
Objectives | The objectives of the cruise were to recover a frame of the coastal observatory and miniSTABLE and STABLE III located in the Dee.
On the 2nd June 2009, the RV Prince Madog departed from Menai Bridge at 04:00 and on the 4th June 2009 the equipment was unloaded at Vittoria Dock in Birkenhead at 18:35. The conditions during the cruise were very mild with clear skies, no significant wind or waves and temperatures around 20 degrees. All three frames were recovered without problems and the equipment on the frames showed no evidence of physical damage. Before anchoring in each channel, a side scan sonar survey was carried and then 2 grab samples were taken (3 grabs were taken in the Hilbre Channel, but the second one was a small sample and contained lots of shells and so was disgarded). The grab samples revealed a mixture of sand and mud and in some cases contained distinct pellets of mud as has been found on previous cruises. The 18-hour CTD/LISST station in the Welsh Channel and the 25-hour CTD/LISST station in the Hilbre Channel were successfully completed. CDT stations were performed half-hourly and SPM and chlorophyll filtering were performed hourly. The chlorophyll filtering equipment was provided by BU. The water contained a large amount of jelly fish and it was common to find a few small ones in the CTD water bottles. |
