Description
Summary

The seasonal, spatial and bathymetric changes in the distribution of chloroplastic pigments (Chla, phaeopigments and CPE), TOC, TON, ATP, bottom water nutrient contents and the main biochemical classes of organic compounds (lipids, proteins and carbohydrates) were recorded from May 1994 to September 1995 over the continental margin of Crete. Sediment core samples were collected from a grid of 30 stations ranging from 40 to 1570 m depth and sliced into 4 to 5 depth layers down to 20cm sediment depth. All data support the conclusion that the continental and bathyal sediments of the Cretan Sea can be considered, from a trophic point of view, as two different subsystems. This study was part of the multidisciplinary EU MAST II MTP I project CINCS (contract MAS2-CT94-0092) and was conducted in conjunction with the Institute of Marine Sciences of the University of Ancona and the Institute of Marine Environmental Sciences of the University of Genova.
