Description
Summary

All observations are collected by merchant vessels operating as the international Voluntary Observing Fleet (VOF). Temperatures and pressures are measured; waves are estimated and winds may be either estimated or measured. Data are collected both in real time (for forecasting) and in slower time via the log books. These latter data are exchanged between national meteorological services under a scheme supervised by the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). On receipt at Bracknell, the data are subjected to quality control checks to ensure internal consistency, and consistency in space and time. The data are stored in chronological order within ten degree squares. The total database now contains over 70 million observations.
