Data holding centreMarine Research Institute
CountryIceland  Iceland
Time periodData exists back to 1934, yearly cruises started in spring of 1948, and mainly quarterly cruises in 1970 until this day.
OngoingYes
Geographical area

Mostly a series of standard sections around Iceland within the limits of 63 to 68 degrees North and 9 to 28 degrees West. These sections have on occasion been extended during the years on different projects, to 53 to 80 degrees North and 0 to 36 degrees West.

Observations
Parameters

Dissolved oxygen parameters in the water column; Nitrate concentration parameters in the water column; Phosphate concentration parameters in the water column; Salinity of the water column; Silicate concentration parameters in the water column; Temperature of the water column

Instruments

CTD; discrete water samplers; salinity sensor; dissolved gas sensors; autoanalysers

Description
Summary

The beginnings of this project can be traced back to the spring-cruise of 1948, and there are data as far back as 1934. Cruises were yearly until 1970 when they became quarterly and have remained so until this day. These time series are invaluable for our knowledge and understanding of environmental conditions in the seas around Iceland, in addition to which they play a significant role in environmental science in a wider sense. This is a long term project, monitoring the hydrographic conditions and environmental factors on a yearly basis around Iceland.
