Description
Summary

This data set, which currently extends to about 700,000 observations, was obtained primarily from the digitization of the contents of the ICES Bulletin Hydrographique (up to 1956). Subsequent to this data were digitized without publication. In some cases data were submitted to ICES in analogue form. At the present time significant amounts of data published in the Bulletin Hydrographique have yet to be digitized, primarily for the years 1934/1935, 1951 and 1955/1956. Most of the data were obtained along standardized ship routes, for example Gothenburg to Newcastle, and Liverpool to New York. Following the establishment of the North Atlantic Ocean Weather Ships in the late 1950s, route data between home port and the Weather Ship Station became the primary source for this data set. Following the demise of the Weather Ships in the late 1970s, and more disorganized data submissions following the establishment of the national data centre system, very few data of this type is available from the 1980s on. However, due to the activities of WOCE and the instrumentation of some North Atlantic cargo vessels, the supply of these data have begun to increase by the late 1990s.
