Fish behaviour

The main task of this project was to collect ichthyoplankton samples and to determine the geographical distribution of pelagic eggs and larvae of fish in the southern part of the Baltic Sea. Samples were collected by means of a Bongo net (333 microm mesh size) during the following cruises on RV 'Baltica': 22 Jul-07 Aug 1993; 17-28 Aug 1994; 01-09 Sep 1994; 20-29 Jun 1995; 06-15 Sep 1995. Different numbers of stations were covered by the Bongo net hauls during particular cruises. Usually, samples were taken at several stations along the 'main profile' from the Gdansk Deep through the Slupsk Furrow, and at the grid of stations in the Bornholm Basin. The following are the numbers of Bongo net stations collected during particular cruises: Jul-Aug 1993 (62), Aug 1994 (28), Sep 1994 (11), Jun 1995 (34), Sep 1995 (27). The whole samples were preserved in 4% borax-buffered formaldehyde and analyzed in the laboratory after the cruise. The eggs and larvae were sorted out by species and their number per fish species was estimated.
