Fishery characterisation

Data sets consist of the interannual variations data on biological parameters of herring populations exploited by Polish fishing fleet in the Baltic Sea. The collected biological data set is also used by the Baltic Fisheries Assessment Working Group (ICES) to assess stocks size and predict total allowable catches (TAC). The results of these studies are also used by the Polish Delegation as a scientific background for negotiations of the annual catch quota establish during the International Baltic Sea Fishery Commission yearly meeting. The biological herring samples are collected at sea on board of fishing cutters and boats, and also from landings at harbours. A variety of biological data includes length and age at age groups, age structure of exploited stocks, sex ratio, sexual maturation, stomachs fullness. The results of herring single analysis as well as length and mass measurements are computerised and stored in a simply format database, in the Microsoft DBasic PC programme.
