Description
Summary

Sea level observations have been made to study land upheaval and the long-term trend in sea level and to aid shipping and coastal construction. Up to 1980's the stations primarily produced continuous paper recordings, after this they have been changed to sample and store data in digital format, and to transmit data in real-time. Tide gauges reference point is annually levelled to a benchmark that is tied to the National Levelling Network. The database contains data in mm-accuracy, but values are published in cm-accuracy. Up to 1970 the database contains data for every four (4) hours. After 1970 data have been gathered every fifteen (15) minutes. The oldest station - Hanko - has been situated in the same place since it was established in 1887. Some stations have been relocated, but the displacements have been small.
