Description
Summary

The common octopus (Octopus vulgaris) is the Octopoda most common around the coasts of the Azores. The species is highly appreciated and caught by diving. Based on monthly samplings, 458 specimens of octopus were studied during 1990. The dorsal mangle length of these specimens ranged from 4 to 26 cm. The sex-ratio observed was not significantly different from the normal 1:1. Maturation and spawning occur all year around, with two peaks: a lower in May and a higher in September. Crustaceans, mainly crabs, are the most important food items in the diet.
