Data set name

National Integrated Monitoring Programme Trace metals data set.

Data holding centreNational Institute for Marine Research and Development "Grigore Antipa"
CountryRomania  Romania
Time period2002-2003
Geographical area

13 sites (13 profiles - 0, 5 and 20 m depth) covering the Romanian Black Sea coastal zone ( transitional waters in the northern part at the Danube mouths and coastal and marine waters in the southern part).

Trace metalloid concentrations in biota; Particulate trace metalloid concentrations in the water column; Inorganic chemical composition of sediment or rocks

Atomic absorption spectrometers

The aim of the Monitoring Programme was to study the spatial and temporal distribution of the trace metals contaminants (Cu, Cd, Pb, Mn, Zn, Ni, Cr) in the abiotic and biotic components of the coastal marine ecosystem, under different sources of pollution (Danube river in the northern area, land based sources in the southern one like waste water discharges, etc.). Responsibility for samples prelevation (using NIMRD research vessel, 5-6 times per year), quality controlling, analysing, interpreting and reporting the trace metals data collected during Monitoring Programme was vested in NIMRD. Trace metals data are included from 13 site profiles (0, 5 and 20 m isobaths) and cover 1 year observation period. Seawater samples (surface level) were collected, along with surface sediments samples (using a Van Veen grab sampler). The data are stored, together with benchmark information, as time series at each site. The data are fully quality controlled. The trace metals data were compared with historical data sets, with the other physical, chemical and biological parameters that were monitored and with data from neighbouring sites in the Black Sea region.
