The data set comprises bathymetry, gravity and magnetic data collected on RRS Shackleton cruise 10/1979. The cruise commenced on 1st November 1979 in the Gulf of Suez and ended on 24th November at Djibouti. Data were collected along 44 profiles with azimuth 44 N averaging 15km apart. Gravity and magnetic data were recorded continuously and stored on magnetic tape using the NERC logging system on-board RRS Shackleton. Bathymetry was recorded at 10 minute intervals, corresponding to a horizontal interval of approximately 3km. For regions of rapidly varying bathymetry, it was necessary to sample more frequently. Continuous gravity was measured using a La Coste-Romberg sea gravity meter mounted on a gyroscopically stabilised platform. Raw gravity data were logged at 2 minute intervals and converted to milligals. The total intensity of the Earth's magnetic field was measured to an accuracy of 1nT using a Varian proton precession magnetometer. Values were logged every 2 minutes, reduced by subtracting the IGRF (1980) and corrected for transient variations recorded at Quseir.
