Data holding centreIEO/Spanish Oceanographic Institute
CountrySpain  Spain
Time periodFrom 1976 to 1991
Geographical area

Rias of Ares, Betanzos, Muros and Arosa (Galicia, Spain)

Phytoplankton generic biomass in water bodies; Chlorophyll pigment concentrations in water bodies; Nitrate concentration parameters in the water column; Nitrite concentration parameters in the water column; Phosphate concentration parameters in the water column; Salinity of the water column; Temperature of the water column

Thermosalinographs; plankton nets; autoanalysers

The collection contains the data corresponding to the periodic samples which, from 1976 to 1991, were carried out by the Oceanographic Centre of La Coruna with the purpose of detecting the presence of potentially toxic phytoplanktonic species, as well as the meteorologic and hydrographic conditions which favour their presence and accumulation. The frequency of the samples was monthly or fortnightly from January to April, and weekly as of May. The number of stations has not been uniform in the course of these years, but in general there have been three in the Ria de Ares, four in the Ria de Muros and five in the Ria de Arosa. Three depths, 0, 5 and 10 metres, were sampled at each station and, as of 1987, integrated samples were taken from 0-5, 5-10 and 10-15 metres. The temperature and salinity data are not complete and, in some cases, are not very reliable. We have toxicity data from molluscs provided by the Xunta de Galicia, as well as meteorological data provided by the Observatory of La Coruna.
