The MUCINUTRI '92 program has two different aims: to follow the temporal evolution of phytoplankton populations and nutrient availability in relation to the vertical mixing of the water column, at a temporal scale narrower than the seasonal and related to the summer occurrence of mucilage in the Tyrrhenian Sea. Two sites were sampled about every ten days at 0, 10, 25, 50, 75 and 100m (a total of about 150 samples) measuring vertical profiles of temperature, salinity, density, dissolved oxygen and pH with a CTD probe and of downwelling, upwelling and scalar PAR quantic irradiance with photoprobe equipped with LICOR sensors. Samples were collected to analyze phytoplankton pigments (Jeffrey and Humphrey, 1975, Biochem. Physiol. Plant. 167: 191-194; Lorenzen, 1967, Limnol. Oceanogr. 12: 343-346) and nutrients (Strickland and Parsons, 1972, Bull. Fish. Res. Bd. Can., 167), yellow substance (Bricaud et al., 1981, Limnol. Oceanogr. 26: 43-53), phytoplankton density (Hasle, 1978, Unesco Monogr. Oceanogr. Methods 6: 88-96) and species composition. When they were present, mucilage have been collected to analyse phytoplankton density and composition, and samples have been incubated with 14C to measure primary production (Riemann and Maller Jensen, 1991, J. Plankt. Res., 13: 853-862) and for autoradiography. Data are arranged in tables of parameters for each cruise, vertical profiles and time series for each station.
