Description
Summary

The distribution and behaviour of sediment-bound artificial radionuclides released from the nuclear reprocessing plant at Sellafield (formerly Windscale) have been investigated in detail. The seabed sediments represent a significant temporary sink for Sellafield-derived radionuclides and a potential future source. Studies have included post-depositional mobility (by bioturbation and redox reactions) and the degree of spatial (vertical and horizontal) and temporal variability in distributions, with particular emphasis on the subtidal, muddy sediments of the eastern Irish Sea and the fate of the transuranium radionuclides (including speciation determinations).
