Description
Summary

The data contained in the dataset arose from a project involving the study of the infralittoral benthic habitats and biotic communities present in the North Harbours Local Plan area, using direct observation techniques. The data set describes both physical and biological characteristics of the area and includes 13 figures and 33 photographs. Different types of mapping methodologies were used. During shore and offshore dives, the occurrence, type and area of bottom covered by the different benthic assemblages as well as special habitats, were recorded. Random spot-dives were used to explore the area between the transects. Physical parameters were recorded and underwater photography was used to record physical and biological features. Physical data includes bathymetric information of the area, which is given with the aid of 3 maps. The main geomorphological features of the seabed recorded during the study are listed and described with the aid of photographs and 3 maps of their occurrence. Several man-made structures recorded in the area are also described and mapped. The different benthic communities and habitats recorded were classified into 6 main types, each of which is described with respect to the occurrence, species composition and state (Photographs included). The distribution of the 6 main benthic habitats and biotic communities throughout the area is shown on maps. The fish fauna recorded during the study are described with the aid of photographs and a species list. Another 3 maps show the proposed 'management zones' in the study area.
