The north west Indian Ocean encompasses some of the biogeochemically most extreme conditions found in any ocean, ranging from the oligotrophic subtropical gyre, to an underlying hypoxic intermediate (100-1200m) water mass extending southward from the Arabian Sea to 12 N, to a pronounced seasonal upwelling regime off coastal Somalia and the south east Arabian peninsula driven by the south west monsoons. The biogeochemical data collected on RRS Charles Darwin cruise 16/86 focused on assessing the contrasting vertical profiles and fluxes of carbon, nitrogen and trace metals in relation to the oceanographic water masses that characterise the different regions of the north west Indian Ocean.
