Under the Food and Environment Protection Act (1985) (FEPA), the Department of the Environment (Northern Ireland) is required to undertake routine monitoring of all sewage sludge and dredge disposal sites under its charge. The aim of the study is to establish whether or not there is any change in the quality of the sea bed in the vicinity of the disposal site that could be the result of the sewage discharge. Monitoring is usually conducted on a roling programme of 1 site per year during April prior to the main summer macrofaunal recruitment period. Each sample site is monitored for macrofaunal abundance and type, total organic carbon, Zn, Ni, Pb, Cu, Cr, Hg, Cd, particle size analysis and Clostridium perfringes.
