Data holding centreNorthern Ireland Environment Agency, Water Management Unit
CountryUnited Kingdom  United Kingdom
Time periodFrom 16 May 1991 onwards
Geographical area

Two sites in the tidal River Lagan; one downstream of McConnell's Weir, one upstream of King's Bridge

Macroalgae and seagrass taxonomy-related counts; Ammonium and ammonia concentration parameters in water bodies; Chlorophyll pigment concentrations in water bodies; Dissolved oxygen concentration parameters in sediment pore waters; Phytoplankton taxonomic abundance in water bodies; Salinity of the water column; Silicate concentration parameters in the water column; Dissolved total and organic nitrogen concentrations in the water column; Dissolved total or organic phosphorus concentration in the water column; Temperature of the water column

Fluorometers; nutrient analysers; plankton nets; discrete water samplers; salinity sensor; autoanalysers

The aim of the study is to see if a new weir currently under construction near Queen Elizabeth Bridge at the downstream end of the River Lagan, causes any changes in the algal populations in the river. The new weir is intended to change the existing pattern of stratification in the river. Thus samples are taken in the form of a vertical profile in order to relate algal populations to the stratification of the water column. Data are contained in a report produced for the Environment Service (DOE NI). Progress reports are produced each year. The 1992 report is currently in production. The data set for the 1991 report comprises 10 sample sets spread between 16 May 1991 and 10 October 1991. Data are in the form of tables and graphs.
