Description
Summary

There is an increasing concern about impacts of environmental change on biological change in biological systems in connection with, for example, the rates of change of biological diversity and the subsequent effects on community structure and ecosystems processes. There is, however, a shortage of information on species-environment relationships in many biological systems and the need to explain and quantify which abiotic/biotic processes control the shelf and coastal ecosystems is of paramount importance. The major objective consists of the analysis of species-environment relationship interactions of the Gullmar Fjord phytoplankton community in relation to water exchange processes to understand which environmental factors can account for the observed patterns of biological diversity (biodiversity) and for seasonal events such as phytoplankton toxic blooms and eutrophication. The statistical analysis of this time series data set is a SEPARATE RESEARCH PROJECT by ANDREA BELGRANO founded by the European Commission (EC) within the frame of the Marine Science and Technology Programme (MAST III). Data from simultaneous sampling for water physics/chemistry are stored at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, SMHI.
