Description
Summary

Birds are important components of estuarine ecosystems. For many waterbird species estuaries are of vital importance for one or more stages of their life cycle. Because of their position at the top of the food web birds are good indicators of environmental changes. Waterbirds are widely used in monitoring programmes as an indicator of the value of wetland habitats. The main aim of the project is understanding the factors determining the distribution and zonation of waterbirds along the salinity gradient of the Schelde estuary. Emphasis is given to the spatial and seasonal distribution. Along the whole Zeeschelde monthly counts are being carried out during low tide.
