The list contains classifications at two levels - the first reflects the marine discipline (shown in capital letters) associated with the data set, while the second attempts to categorize the type of data within the discipline. If the type of data you are seeking does not fall naturally under one of the data theme keys on the menu, then you should select keys at the discipline level. All data sets are keyed at least to the discipline level - they are only further keyed at the data type level if it is appropriate to do so.

Each data set is linked to one or more sea areas. Note that an ocean or ocean region is only named if the data set has ocean-wide coverage, in which case the individual sea area within the ocean is not named. For data sets that have world coverage, select the 'WORLD WIDE COVERAGE' option. To select all data sets for a whole ocean, whether or not the data sets have ocean wide coverage, 'multiple select' all options for that region. The default is set to match any data set irrespective of its sea area.
Marine area type	Coastal Offshore   This search criteria is used to distinguish 'offshore' data from data which is essentially 'coastal, riverine or estuarine'. For this purpose, data sets containing data collected more than about 5 miles (10km) from the shore are classed as 'offshore'. The default selection does not distinguish between areas, therefore you need only make a selection from this table if you wish to limit your search to one of these 'area types'.
Coastal zone	To use this selection you must select 'Coastal' as your 'Marine area type'. Data sets containing data within close proximity of the coastal zone (i.e. within approximately 5 miles (10km) of the coast) will be keyed with appropriate entries from this table. Note that, as all data sets are keyed with a sea area, it is possible by searching on both tables to select out coastal zones by sea area or region. Data from specific islands in the open ocean can be searched for by setting coastal zone to 'Islands' and sea area to the appropriate ocean, region or sea. The default selection will match any data set irrespective of the country or continent.
