Cruise Inventory Information

Long name RRS James Clark Ross cruise JR20100315 (JR235, JR236, JR239)
Short name JR20100315 (JR235, JR236, JR239)
Objectives and Narrative JR235 is a project of the BAS Polar Oceans research programme, working here collaboratively with groups from NOC and UEA (who were onboard primarily for JR239). JR235 is a near-meridional section, running from the northern Weddell Sea, across the Scotia Sea, and up to South Georgia, along which we conducted full-depth CTD/LADCP stations, and drew water samples for measurements of transient tracers (CFCs, SF6), oxygen and nutrients, carbonate system parameters and other oceanographic tracers. This line was first occupied during WOCE in 1995, and has been repeated twice since (1999 and 2005). The primary use of the data will be to assess changes in properties of Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW) as it flows from its source regions in the Weddell Sea, through the Scotia Sea, and into the abyssal layers of the global ocean.

JR236 is a swath bathymetry survey of the Orkney Passage, a deep gap just east of the South Orkney islands on the South Scotia Ridge. This passage is a key region of outflow of AABW from the Weddell Sea, and the BAS Polar Oceans programme (in conjunction with Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in the US) is funded to deploy and maintain current meter moorings here. A few such moorings already exist, and prior to scaling-up the moorings effort here, it was deemed sensible to better map the seabed of Orkney Passage, to ensure that the moorings are put in the most effective locations, and to help with interpretation of the data when they are recovered. This was the purpose of JR236, during which we mapped the ocean bed here in unprecedented detail, using the James Clark Ross' multibeam echosounder.

JR239 is a near-zonal section along the South Scotia Ridge (and extending eastward beyond the end of the ridge to around 17.5 degW), as part of the Antarctic Deep Water Rates of Export (ANDREX) project. This is an Antarctic Funding Initiative project that began last year with a cruise on RRS James Cook, but which was cut short because of a medical emergency. (NERC consequently provided with a second trenche of fieldwork funding, which has enabled us to complete the fieldwork this year from James Clark Ross). As part of this year's ANDREX cruise (JR239) we have conducted full-depth CTD/CO2/tracer stations along the northern boundary of the Weddell Gyre. When concatenated with last year's ANDREX cruise, and a US-occupied section at the eastern side of the Weddell Gyre (CLIVAR I6S), we will have a complete box of stations around the periphery of the gyre. This will enable us to construct budgets of key parameters such as heat, volume, carbon etc. into and out of the Weddell Gyre, including those associated with AABW.
