GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2025

The GEOTRACES Intermediate Data Product 2025 (IDP2025) was released on 20th November 2025. The IDP2025 represents a major new data release. Compared to IDP2021, IDP2025 improves data coverage significantly in all ocean basins. Overall, the new data product contains 16 new cruises, 721 new stations and 468,317 new data values. As an example, the number of dissolved Fe values has increased by 7025 to 23,474 in the IDP2025.

IDP2025 introduces new parameters that reflect (1) different electrochemical methods for the measurement of dissolved trace metal ligand concentrations and binding constants, (2) extraction with or without pre-oxidation of the samples using UV exposure or hydrogen peroxide addition for Cu concentration and isotopic composition measurements, and (3) medium and small size classes of particulate TEIs.

In the seawater discrete water sample dataset, the previously separate parameters with sampling suffixes BOTTLE, FISH, UWAY, PUMP, BOAT_PUMP, and SUBICE_PUMP were unified into single parameters. The new, unified parameters, such as Fe_D_CONC, now contain all measured values of the given TEI, irrespective of the sampling system. This makes using the IDP2025 data easier and ensures that data of easily overlooked specific sampling systems, such as FISH, are utilised.

IDP2025 contains the data present in IDP2014, IDP2017 and IDP2021 along with the new additions.

The GEOTRACES IDP2025 consists of two parts:

  1. the digital datasets — available for download below or as a subset via the GEOTRACES webODV online service hosted by the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI).
  2. the eGEOTRACES Electronic Atlas — is based on the digital data package and provides section plots (as illustrated below) and animated 3D scenes for many of the parameters. The 3D scenes provide geographical context, which is crucial for correctly assessing extent and origin of tracer plumes as well as for inferring processes acting on the tracers and shaping their distribution.

IDP2025 digital datasets

The IDP2025 digital datasets are made available to download in the BODC Published Data Library (PDL) by the GEOTRACES International Data Assembly Centre hosted by the British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC). They are provided in 3 data formats: ASCII, NetCDF and ODV collections. The latter is for use with the Ocean Data View software.
