Objectives and Narrative | Within the framework of the International Polar Year (IPY), cruise Bonus Goodhope aims to improve understanding of the interactions between oceanic dynamics, circulation, biogeochemistry of the Antarctic Ocean in the Atlantic sector, in particular the level of zones of Indo-Atlantic exchange and those with the Sud-African continental shelf. This multidisciplinary project joined together physicists, bio- and - geochemists and modellers: by coupling I) oceanic dynamics II) with the biogeochemistry in the water column, the atmosphere and the sediment, III) with the study of trace elements and their isotopes which used as tracers of lithogenic sources, circulation and ventilation of the water masses, and of biogeochemical processes, and which also make it possible to quantify the particulate flows exported from surface water towards deep water, and iv) with the development of models which gather configurations on large scale and regional scale, models idealised, biogeochemical models, and simulations of the trace elements and their isotopes; the project will provide significant projections in the physical, chemical and biological processes brought into play on the scale of the Antarctic Ocean and a climatic scale. Project Bonus Goodhope was approved by International Scientific Committee ICSU/WMO the API one (EoI#584), and also appears under three clusters key to IPY one (CASO ID#132, GEOTRACES ID#269, ICED ID#417). Bonus Goodhope has strong interactions with the IPY project ZERO&DRAKE (EoI#880), a GEOTRACES study and CASO along the Meridian line 0°E in the Atlantic Austral, and in the passage of Drake aboard German ship RV POLARSTERN (mission ANT-XXIV/3, Chef scientist: E. Fahrbach). This interaction will reinforce and extend the studies in physical oceanography which are laid down in BONUS-GOODHOPE. The objectives of Bonus Goodhope lie within the scope of three international programs GEOTRACES (SCOR), IMBER (IGBP/SCOR) and CLIVAR/CliC/SCAR-Southern Ocean. |
