BODC Cruise Metadata Report for RRS Challenger (74CH) cruise CH5/79

This report collates information from the BODC cruise inventory and oceanographic databases. It presents

Cruise Inventory Information

Long name RRS Challenger (74CH) cruise CH5/79
Short name CH5/79
Objectives and Narrative 1. To measure the critical physical and biological parameters in the vicinity of the Nymphe Bank, Celtic Sea, during the developing phase of the spring phytoplankton bloom. The vertical and horizontal distribution of temperature, salinity and chlorophyll 'a' would be measured using a 'batfish' profiling system, while the surface distribution of temperature, salinity, oxygen and nutrient concentrations, particle size distribution and chlorophyll 'a' concentration would be sampled continuously from a pumped water supply.
2. To carry out a similar sampling operation on the shelf edge in the vicinity of the Goban Spur to investigate the position and profiles of any shelf edge fronts.
