Cruise Inventory Information
Long name | RRS James Clark Ross (74JC) cruise JR19960422 (AMT2, JR13) |
---|---|
Short name | JR19960422 (AMT2, JR13) |
Objectives and Narrative |
This cruise formed the second of a series of Atlantic transects, initially over 3 years, to acquire data for the calibration of remotely sensed observations and the validation of remote sensing products, leading to improved and more accuate interpretation of remote sensing observations. One of the primary objectives of the AMT programme is further understanding the interaction between physical processes and biological production. This will be essential of advanced models. Testing hypotheses on the partitioning of the ocean into biogeochemical provinces, and defining these regions, is central to overall objectives of the AMT programme.
Aims: 1. To improve our understanding of the relationship between physical processes and biological production 2. Identify, define and quantify latitudinal changes in biogeochemical provinces. 3. Determine phytoplankton characteristics and photosynthetic parameters 4. Identify nutrient regimes and their role in biogeochemical cycles 5. Characterise plankton community structure, including the accurate determination of carbon values 6. Relate the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) in surface waters with the biological production 7. Acquire data for the calibration of remotely sensed observations (primary validation) 8. Secondary validation of remotely sensed products 9. Interpret basin-scale remote sensing observations 10. Develop models that enable the interpretation of satellite imagery in terms of total water column properties |
