BODC Cruise Metadata Report for RV Pelagia (64PE) cruise PE118

Introduction

This report collates information from the BODC cruise inventory and oceanographic databases. It presents

Cruise Inventory Information

Long name RV Pelagia (64PE) cruise PE118
Short name PE118
Objectives and Narrative OMEX-98. Biology expedition to NW Spain.

Objectives:
1. To study the distribution and activity of organisms living on the sea floor off NW Spain and of the organic matter and biomarker concentrations in sediments.
2. To seek further evidence of relatively high input and respiratory activity and biomass at the abyssal station.
3. To comparate measurements at two other deep statioons - one away from the continental shelf and one near the channel between Galicia and the Galicia Bank.
4. To make a comparative study on the coral Lophelia living on the Iberian slope and on the Galicia Bank.

Narrative:
At each station a CTD profile of the water column was made and samples of near-bottom water for oxygen and phytopigment analysis were collected. Sediment samples were collected with a box- or multi-corer for the analysis of: macrofauna, meiofauna, phytopigments, C/N and porosity. Megafauna was collected with a video-Agassiz trawl recording the small-scale topography of the sea floor. Trawling was preceded by a small-scale survey with 3.5kHz echosounder. Whole sediment community oxygen consumption (SCOC) was measured in-situ with a modular bottom lander. At one station SCOC was additionally measured on board in 30cm incubated cores.
