Cruise Inventory Information

Long name RRS James Clark Ross (74JC) cruise JR19961128 (JR16)
Short name JR19961128 (JR16)
Objectives and Narrative The ship departed Rothera on passage to Vernadski and an overflight by Twin Otter revealed an ice free passage for the ship to travel through. The ship proceeded to POL mooring 11 near Signey where a bottom pressure recorder was laid at approx. 2600m depth. The ship then made passage north-west to POL mooring 8 where it was tracked to the sea bed. The passage to POL mooring 8 was used for the T5 XBT section containing 33 stations. In total 30 CTD stations were occupied. The CTD itself was fitted with a rosette multisampler, altimeter, 10kHz pinger, transmissometer, pressure sensor, temperature sensor and 10 litre Niskin bottles. Data processing, navigation logging and underway salinity sampling continued throughout the cruise. A hull mounted VADCP measured the bottom tracking except when the ship's speed was too great. An oceanlogger logged meteorological and sea surface data every 5 seconds during the cruise.
