Changing Arctic Ocean cruise JR17007 Salinity Samples Sampling document
Originator's Protocol for Data Acquisition and Analysis
Salinity water samples were collected from CTD bottles and the ship's non-toxic water supply and were used to calibrate the CTD and TSG sensors.
Samples were collected in OSIL 200 ml glass salinity bottles with compatible OSIL caps and inserts. The bottles were rinsed three times before filling to the shoulder of the bottle. Bottle caps and inserts were also rinsed. After capping the samples were stored in the salinometer laboratory inside OSIL salinity bottle storage crates to allow them to equilibrate to room temperature before measurement.
Samples were analysed on board after at least 24 hours of being placed to equilibrate using a Guildine Autosal 8400B salinometer and standardised against IAPSO Standard Seawater.
BODC Data Processing Procedures
Data were received in a single spreadsheet containing the conductivity ratio replicates, average and offset and corresponding salinity for each sample. The file also contatined information on crate and bottle number which were matched against the CTD cast using the logsheets used during the cruise. Originator's parameters were mapped against BODC parameter codes. No unit conversions were required as the originator's units were found to be equivalent to those used by BODC.
